Meihana & Kelly

Taranaki locals, Kelly and Meihana met in 2007 through mutual friends and hit it off instantly. They began dating and it wasn't long after that they began their life together, moving in as a couple.

In 2009 they found out they were having a baby which was a huge surprise as Meihana had always wanted to be married before children.  Kelly says "we started to plan on getting married, we just weren't sure when so we decided that if I found THE dress we would do it".

Their daughter Lily arrived on the 23 November 2009 and still there was no dress. However, three months later and some local searching, Kelly found her dress at Churchwood Bridal so they set the date for the wedding - 8 January 2011.

With the help of Kelly's Mum and both family and friends, they managed their entire wedding on a budget of under $10k and married at a private garden on Koru Road, Oakura with reception at the Kaitake Golf Club. "We decorated the room with the help of Theatre Lamp and Lighting doing a back drop and feature lighting. We draped the ceiling ourselves and made our own centre pieces and chair covers".

The couple agree that the best part of their day was the naming ceremony for their daughter Lily, with Kelly's nephew doing a reading and was finished off with a prayer by Meihana, that his Dad had taught him before he passed away. There were funny moments as well, "Meihana ripped his pants as he threw me over his shoulder to cross the river for photos. And we had to push start one of the wedding cars as the starter motor wouldn't work" Kelly recalls.

Life has been busy ever since the wedding. Meihana works offshore and Kelly and her Mum Shirley took over the Churchwood Bridal store five weeks later. "For me it's very special helping girls feel as great as I did on my special day".

As Kelly looks back, there isn't one materialistic thing the she can think of that made her wedding day special, she says "Our wedding was so beautiful, only because of our family and friends we shared it with".
