Here in Taranaki we have a great selection of incredibly talented photographers – but when it comes to finding the right one for your special day – it’s hard to know where to start? It’s not enough to just like their photos….you’re going to be spending a lot of time with them on the day – so you have to like them, right?
But liking them isn’t enough to seal the deal – you want to understand what they offer, what you’re paying for and what sets them apart from other photographers.
So we’ve asked an expert!
We sat down with Amanda from Amanda Ritchie Photography to get the inside story and asked her what kind of questions you should be asking your Wedding Photographer before locking them in – and here’s what Amanda recommended:-
1. What’s included in your packages and are there any additional costs we should be aware of?
This helps couples understand exactly what they’re getting: coverage hours, number of images, travel fees, second shooters, albums, and any extras that might not be obvious upfront.
2. How long after the wedding will we receive our gallery and in what format?
Turnaround times vary. It’s important to know when to expect sneak peeks, full galleries, and whether images are delivered via online gallery, USB, or printed products.
3. Do you have backup equipment and a contingency plan if you’re unable to attend?
Professional photographers should have spare gear and a trusted network of colleagues in case of emergencies. This question reassures couples that their day is protected.
4. Have you worked at our venue before, or are you happy to visit it beforehand?
Familiarity with the venue can help with planning and lighting. If not, a site visit or thorough research shows commitment to capturing the space well.
5. How do you manage group shots and the timeline on the day?
Group photos can be time-consuming. A photographer with a clear system, whether it’s a shot list, a helper, or a pre-agreed plan – will keep things smooth and stress-free.
