We were stoked to recently welcome Guy Vickers Photography to the directory.
Guy’s one of the new kids on the block, as far as Taranaki Weddings is concerned but he’s a seasoned professional when it comes to all things photography (seriously – check out some of his stunning imagery) With more than two decades experience photographing weddings and so much more, all around the globe, we couldn’t wait to have the chance to sit down and get to know Guy better – and now it’s your turn.
So grab a cuppa, get comfy and meet Guy…..
How long have you worked in the Wedding Industry (specifically in Taranaki as well)?
I have been photographing weddings since 2001 as a major part of my photography business. These have been in other cities like Los Angeles, Christchurch, Wellington and of course in Taranaki as well! Recently I have made the decision to do more wedding and portrait photography to build my business. We are lucky in Taranaki to have such beautiful scenery to use to capture the magic of a wedding day. I am really excited about the creative opportunities that this beautiful landscape will provide when combined with the people of this region.
Have you always worked in the Industry – if not, what did you do before?
I am trained in agriculture, having grown up on a dairy farm and have worked in the industry for 25 years, mainly as a rural professional. It’s been a privilege to work with talented people at all levels in the industry and it has helped me develop business and personal skills that have become the foundation of my photography. I’m also a highly experienced outdoor athlete- at university I was a kayak and alpine instructor and I have completed Outward Bound, the Kathmandu Coast-to-Coast Triathlon and many small expeditions in New Zealand and in Canada. Photography has always been an integral part of my adventures and I have now reached the peak of technical knowledge and understanding of light that sets me up well for wedding photography.
What made you want to work in the Wedding Industry?
I love weddings, especially that they are full of happiness, festivity, spontaneity and emotion, a great opportunity to capture photographs that reflect the essence of the day! As a creative, I love being able to work with people and the environment, I strive for excellence in my photography and I just love being free to create with my cameras. I also like being around happy people who are dressed for a special occasion!
Is this your full time occupation or your side hustle?
Photography is now my full time business, although I do occasionally work in the building industry as a contractor, building decks and installing kitchens. My wife Jackie works full time and I am the day-to-day carer for our two beautiful teenage children, doing up our house, growing the vegetables, maintaining the cars and doing most of the cooking!
What’s your favourite moment in a wedding?
When the bride walks up the aisle and everyone shows their true emotions, that is the most memorable moment at any wedding I have been to. It’s a beautiful moment of honesty and adoration that is so satisfying to witness.
What’s your favourite thing about working in this Industry?
Helping create an incredible experience for the bride and groom and meeting their family and friends as part of the event. This includes working with other professionals as part of the wedding. I really like the planning and preparation that goes on before the wedding, it’s such an exciting time and fun to be part of, it’s also the time that I get to conceptualise what the wedding photographs will look like!
Tells us three interesting – non wedding related – things that people might want to know about you?
1. After university I worked as a shepherd on a large station in the Canterbury High Country.
2. When we lived in Vancouver City, Canada, I worked as part of a team creating a themed new years eve party for 1000 guests.
3. My favourite food is lemon meringue pie!
If you’re still searching for the perfect person to capture your special day – or if you just want to know even more about Guy – make sure you check out his profile on the directory.
